The Economy and Horror Collecting

HORRORBID BREAKING NEWS: The economy is bad! I know your sitting there staring at your screen shocked to have just heard that news. Our 401k's are in the garbage our stocks are about as valuable as a used condom and apparently it is nearly impossible to sell RV's these days. Not a lot of reasons to get out of bed! Except for the love of collecting sweet lady horror. You have to have that mask you've been wanting, you're going to get that new figure or poster, you can't stop the urge because of something as frivolous as money, can you?....

Follow up:

I think a lot of us are new to the fact that we might not be able to pick up the latest version of our favorite collectible. Over the years we have had the luxury of picking and choosing are most favorite items simply by the way they looked, not always by the price tag. With the way the economy is going the pinch is starting to be felt by all of us. Yes there are pockets of areas that are much worse off compared to other areas and the internet does help greatly to still get products out to the masses. But the hard facts are we are all feeling this recession.

I would say the majority of you reading this right now are experiencing some tightening of the budget due to the bank crisis. I know from my own experiences I've bought probably half the amount of collectibles last year as I did the year before. I've spoken with many artists and companies that sell horror and for the most part things have been staying fairly steady. Business is still relatively good but every is worried that things will get worse and people will by less and less.

Mask makers have certainly seen a downturn. Masks that sold for $700 in 2007 are now being offered for much less. Masks that get mentioned for sale with a $700 price tag today generally get laughed at because of how the market has changed. The good news is this is a collectors market, if you have the money it's time to BUY! BUY! BUY! Things are going for a lot less these days and that isn't a bad thing for us the consumer....

There is no doubt if things don't get better we will all feel the pinch but hopefully they will get this turned around and the sun will shine again. With all the great horror movies coming out this year and all the new collectibles it would be ashamed to have to choose food over collecting.

I have purchased so many tight masks this year I had to buy a storage shed to put them in. I ran out of room because I'm so money and my rv cant keep em all cause its small and my collection is big. I love horror and I love Jason,

Food and rent are overrated.
Horror is forever!

Yes, the economy is bad, but that can also be a good thing for some collectors. People are letting go of their prized collection pieces for much less than what they were worth just a few months ago.

It really is having an effect at least on my family. I am having to really watch what I buy now and if I want to resell something like I used too to make a huge profit, that is pretty much gone!

I know how you feel man, it's definitely tight here. Sales are steadily moving up though, despite it all. Just this month I sold more figures than I have in the last 3 months! I think the new F13th had something to do with that, but thankfully the bottom hasn't fallen out yet... YET. lol

I completely agree with what everyone is saying. My wife and I are teachers, and we will know in the next couple of weeks if we even have jobs next year. They are having to cut 10 teachers per school and most of you know I am the only 7th grade Social Studies teacher at my school. I will pay off a few things this month and possibly buy one more thing...and then that's it until August, depending on whether we still have jobs....great blog. I hope this personal touch to the hobby of horror continues in the blogs....not to mention I started things off with a bang i think...lol

take care,
Tommy

Ive noticed that the price of people selling their personal masks has gone down but I do wish that some of the artists would adjust their prices to the economy. Especially Myers masks....I know its about supply and demand but I think that the Myers mask collecting community has proven to be very dedicated. people seem to be avid collectors and good supporters of the artists. I know there are people like HSS who do give-aways and guys like Jack In the Box have killer prices; but it would be cool to see some of the prices on masks across the board go down. Especially if they arent a limited run. (FEAR sale maybe? ;-) anyway just my two cents)

I think what you mentioned in your post interest to say the least. Recently i seen reviews about this on http://www.rapidsloth.com/Lower-Learning-(2008)-DVDSCR-XviD-LL.html and alot of people praise it.
