NECA Obtains "Nightmare" Rights, Cinema of Fear Dead?

We've recently learned that NECA just scored the license to produce action figures in 7", 12" and 18" sizes beginning with Freddy Krueger from the new Nightmare on Elm Street remake opening in theaters next year. So what does this mean for Mezco's Cinema of Fear line that was comprised mostly of Freddy and Jason? Read more . . .

Follow up:

Keep in mind that this NECA license agreement also umbrellas previous Nightmare films, as well as the Friday the 13th franchise.

(The above image is of Mezco's more recent Freddy figures.)

So what does this mean for Mezco and Cinema of Fear? There are several things for us collectors to consider. First, there is word on the web that Cinema of Fear was a no show at Comic Con. This should have been our first sign of something brewing. Second, I truly hope Mezco continues the Cinema of Fear line with their other licenses. Could this possibly turn into a good thing? I think so. Mezco could continue with more obscure horror characters like Harry Warden and so on. Mezco would have to get active and acquire new licenses but sometimes change is a good thing.

Another thing to think about is there is no mention of 3 3/4" figures rights. So can Mezco still retain Nightmare figures at this size? Also, many feel Mezco is superior to NECA when it comes to horror figures and they view this transition as a step down in sculpts and quality. Still, this is a chance for NECA to jump on the success of Cinema of Fear and emulate it. I'm crossing my fingers that whatever NECA comes out with for the new Nightmare remake blows us away!

Below is a comparison between Mezco and Neca's Friday the 13th Remake Jason figures.

I am actually finding this to be rather sad. I LOVE Cinema Of Fear! They really produce some fine looking figures, but it depends on the figure to. For Example, I am liking Neca's version of the new Jason better than Mezco's.

However, Mezco made more than just Freddy and Jason. They have the're Screen Grabs, but still basically remained with Freddy and Jason, but they did make TCM screen grabs and figures as well. I don't know, "Maybe" this is just the beginning for Mezco?

Myself personally, I'd love to see a Harry Warden figure! On a list of others, Marty Ranson from Slaughter High, would be VERY nice to see!

I geuss we will do the only thing we can do, and Just wait it out...

i will miss cinema of fear, but if they replace there losses with a harry warden line , and crowley from hatchet , and other cool stuff it will work itself out. theres a lot of figures that can be done , prom night, the burning, the prowler ect..

Man, this sucks. The liscense keeps going back and forth between the two, Neca then Mezco then back to Neca. What Neca should've spent the money on was the god damn TMNT MOVIE liscense, the first original film. Instead, they break bland ground and go back to something that already fucked up once by not running with fully.

McFarlane rules this department.....PERIOD!Both of these companies do a great job, but,McFarlane does it right by creating many, many different characters from a bazillion franchises and ,but, for maybe 3-4 spawn choices, are all perfect.

i prefere cinema of fear over neca figures, COF give fans what they want which is figures sourced from all the films they were the first to FINALLY introduce victim figure too (nancy and debbie)

cinema of fear is made up of freddy jason and leather face because they are lionsgates "CINEMA OF FEAR" which is were the line came from in the first place
