'Paranormal Activity' Becomes Most Profitable Movie Ever

This is just inspiring. Yahoo reports that a little film called Paranormal Activity, made for only $11,000, just became the most profitable movie ever! After reaching $65.1 million Wednesday P.A. took the thrown. What an uplifting experience this is for independent filmmakers everywhere and what about the horror genre? Still think we're a joke? Butts in seats and cold hard cash don't lie. Read more for Yahoo's report.

Follow up:

According to Yahoo.com:

"Paranormal Activity" has just surpassed "The Blair Witch Project" to become the most profitable movie ever. The box office hit was made for less than $15,000 and as of Wednesday has grossed a whopping $65.1 million, TheWrap.com reported. The movie's box office success has reaped a staggering 414,233 percent return on its initial investment."

Despite if you liked it or not, all horror fans should be rejoicing in sweet victory. Hopefully this opens the door to the independent market where we'll be seeing more original films and ideas. Is anybody else tired of remakes and sequels yet?

I though it would be more scary. I have seen the trailer and the people in the trailer like shit their pants... I have seen the same day The skeptic and it was more scary than PA. It was entertaining but not so scary and wow like people were saying.

Whether you loved the film or thought it overhyped, the fact that this film has done so well with such a meager budget and word-of-mouth marketing plan speaks volumes about the emerging ravenous fan base for independent horror. For every blogger and poster who constantly bashes Hollywood's greedy need to shy from originality and lean on sequels and reduxes for the quick buck, this is indeed great news. As intrigued as I am about the possible success of the forthcoming NOES redux with it's infinitely expanded realm of possibility, it is refreshing to know that these little films can build this type of momentum in what has become a CGI-saturated, big-budgeted modern horror era.
