Updated: Not Just Another Teen Vampire Movie
At least not this one! Summit Entertainment (the studio behind the "Twilight" franchise) has another vamp film in the works with Brad Pitt producing entitled "Vlad". This film will focus on the Dracula legend and not young women and the angsty, metrosexual sparkling vampires who love them. It’s an action-oriented movie about the origins of the Dracula mythology in Vlad the Impaler...
Follow up:
Since music video directors are a hot commodity (think Spike Jonze and Marc Webb), Anthony Mandler has been hired to direct. He has worked with such stars as Rihanna, The Killers, and Eminem. Execs were impressed by the reel he made, drawing comparisons to Zach Snyder and the work he has done on 300. Heat Visions says that Summit hopes that the film will be “a visually edgy and radical period movie that also will break a new talent”.
Vampire movies have been moving away from their horror origins and into the territory of soapy romance and action films. Vlad isn’t likely to reverse the trend, but hopefully it will be more substantive than Van Helsing and all of the other recent attempts that pass for horror films these days. Other films have attempted to build upon the Dracula origin story (some have couched it within the Judas legend), but I can’t think of any that have constructed a decent film out of it, so this will be fertive ground with which to work.
Update: Word is that this film, while centering on Vlad the Impaler, will have nothing to do with the Vampire aspect of it.
