A Look Back - Clive Barker's Tortured Souls Series 1 & 2

Most of you readers know that HorrorBid is all about collectibles, masks, figures and well, pretty much anything horror that we can get our hands on. Hello! Auction site for horror collectibles anybody? So we happened to breeze past some pics of McFarlane's Tortured Souls figures from '01 and '02 and you know what? These Cenobites are just as sick and twisted now as they were then so we thought it would be fun to revisit.

Follow up:

We'll say it now. McFarlane has some of the greatest ideas when it comes to collectible horror figures. From their Twisted Christmas line to the Six Faces of Madness, McFarlane is one of our favorites! Our only complaint is that they don't put out more.

Well, one of their best lines was produced in 2001 & 2002 when Todd McFarlane and Cliver Barker collaborated to create Tortured Souls Series 1 and 2. They are a spin-off so to speak of the demonic creatures featured in the Hellraiser films called Cenobites. Ok, let's be honest here. The Cenobites are the best thing in those movies by far! They so deserved a figure series of their own and who better to do it than McFarlane?!

Roughly a year ago Barker talked about directing a film based on the Tortured Souls figure (which has been in limbo for years). Clive said, "I think it'll happen. But I think it'll happen probably only when I've got back into the swing of directing. There's a script I like very much. I love the figures, the sculptures. I think they're beautiful, detailed things. Do I want to see those things walk onto the screen and speak? Damn right I do. So I would like to make sure that happens at some point". He goes on, "But right now we've got a lot of scripts that are already written, and I want to get those out and have people shooting them."

This movie has been in limbo forever and the more time that passes the less and less likely it seems. Well Mr. Barker, we're hoping you're back into the "Swing" of directing because we're dying to see this movie happen!!! What can we do to help? We've already got our Mini DV camcorder packed up and the plane tickets are booked! Let's make this happen!!!

A little bit of Tortured history - The first series of six action figures and a novelette starring the characters of the series was distributed by McFarlane Toys on July 2001, the series included six monsters designed by horror author Clive Barker. Each of the figures included a chapter of the 32-page novelette, written by Barker.

Due to the success of the idea, a second series called Tortured Souls 2: The Fallen was released the following year. The appearance of the new figures was more visceral than the first toy line, with less reliance on the bondage-like clothing styles of the first series and more reliance on surgical alteration and mutilation or, as Clive Barker described it, "the use of flesh as canvas." Additionally, it should be noted that characters of Tortured Souls 2: The Fallen neither appeared in the original novella nor came with any additional story writing.

You can score both sets over at amazon but Series one is just a little bit more expensive so you might want to google the web for other distributors with lower prices.

Dude, a movie would so rule. Anything by Barker and/or McFarlene is an appreciated breath after most the waste that gets pushed out these days.

Loved these figures. I own Venal, the Scythe Meister, & Agonistes. IMO, the first series was all they needed. The 2nd one didn't really feel like something from Barker's mind. .. And a movie would've been awesome!

i wish they'd had toys like this when I was a kid. i feel i would be a much better adjusted individual if they had. maybe they'll work one or two of them into the Hellraiser re-boot........

Consider the color of the designer boots. The most preferred one is a black one which would go with all. With the luxury of a comfortable budget, more colors could be looked at.
