Fail: Academy Blunders Horror Tribute

Wow, for the first time in years the Academy Awards finally acknowledge that the horror genre still has a pulse. Furthermore, the presenters make the bold claim that many in the show's attendance owe horror for launching their careers in the movie business. We as horror fans should be thankful for the recognition but why aren't we? Read more.

Follow up:

The 82nd Academy Awards paid tribute to the horror genre this evening by presenting a montage of various horror films. However, The Academy showed just how out of touch they are with our genre by having the kryptonite of horror introduce the montage. Yeah, I'm talking about Twilight's Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. To some, that's like salt to the wounds.

The montage featured a range of horror films including several Universal classic flicks . . . but is it just us or did it seem like the whole tribute centered a little too much on the slasher sub-genre? Not that we don't love slashers but if one were to pay tribute to a genre that spans decades one would think that people as prestigious and knowledgeable about film history as the Academy would have had a more diverse selection.

At the end of it all, big deal right? The (Oscars) Academy has forgotten about horror since The Exorcist and any notice is good notice. I guess it's still nice to be recognized even if they can't pronounce your name right.

who else about threw something at the TV when they had a fuckin Twilight Clip in there?! I can get past the Twilight stars introducing it, they are whats hot right now. But to put a clip from Twilight in there was cock-slap in the fucking face! They know horror like i know brain surgery (fun fact: i don't know shit about brain surgery)

Not that I had any respect for the Academy Awards prior to tonight. Considering my love being Independent .... the Academy is more or less my equivalent of the Antichrist. Any ways, the montage to me was more of a kick in the teeth, immediately following a curb stomp from Kane Hodder. I love Slashers, but you are right, the entire collection of clips only came to show the complete lack of knowledge that these people really have about our genre. Also, to have that group of Sexually confused sparkling mall goth wanna be ninjas listed in our genre .......... No, dont want to even get started there. Once I get on that topic I can never seem to stop. Anyway, yeah dude, you called it ;P

I agree why the fuck did they have a Twilight clip in the montage? Twilight is the farthest thing from horror I can think of!!! I totally agree with wtflol!!!!!

I wasn't home to watch the Oscars, so I will judge this montage when I actually see it. But come on, you must know the Oscars are mostly bullshit.

You know I have to agree, we don't need the oscars to decide what is horror and what isn't...it's like listening to a movie critic and basing my decision on the movie he likes, it's the same with the oscars. It doesn't matter whether or not they recognize the horror genre or not because it's obviously not the same as the fans look to as horror look at twilght THAT IS NOT HORROR!!! But it's what's popular with all the female teenyboppers.

Wow...... What a complete geek over-reaction. Twilight was in there for what? A second maybe two! I enjoyed the montage there was a good mix of films and the sound mix on the whole thing was excellent. Of course there were no independant movies, that's not what the Oscars are about. As for there being too much focus on the slasher genre. Really? I didn't get that at all. There were monster movies, sci-fi and supernatural in there. Geez people stop looking for things to bitch about, there was a lot to like there.

That was a great montage . . . if you're just a general movie goer who doesn't know or care about horror. There was hardly any indy flicks or Hammer in there. They showed Scream at least 3-4 times and same thing for the slashers. There is such a larger pool of films to pull from. The should have shown ONE clip from a movie and that's it . . not showing constant repeats.

A rate 1 for the tribute, 5 for the post!

I would have liked to see more appreciation for the history of horror. Outside of the Universal Monsters, they only showed clips from the late 60's.

Vincent Price and Christopher Lee both deserved a nod.

Kristen Stewart did a nice job in "The Messengers". Why didn't they use a clip from that instead of from "Twilight", a romance-genre franchise?
And where was "Drag Me to Hell" in the montage?
Sometimes I wonder if the academy members actually watch movies.

I agree that twilight had no business in there but there were other movies that somehow got in there as well and they are not horror movies either they are comedies! Its not that I am not a fan of those movies but they were not straight up horror films which was suposed to be the whole point any way right?
