Spoiler Free Film Review: THE LAST EXORCISM Also Q and A Video With Eli Roth

Yes this is our review for The Last Exorcism and it comes courtesy of our friend and Canadian horror review "bastard" Will Brownridge (The Film Reel). All joking aside Will has did a ton for us in the past and this has to be one of the coolest. It pays to work at the HorrorBid Canada offices. Not only did he have the chance to screen the The Last Exorcism but he had a Q and A with Eli Roth, Ashley Bell and Patrick Fabian....

Follow up:

Below is Will's review and the Q and A while he attended the TAD (Toronto After Dark) Film Festival 2010.

I have to be honest that I wasn’t really excited to see this one. It looked relatively spooky and it seemed to have a straight forward idea. Girl is possessed, preacher comes to perform an exorcism, end of story. At least that was the impression that I got from the trailer. I was completely wrong. It was the exact opposite of what I thought it would be and it was an incredibly amazing film. This is the kind of movie where I’m so taken by how good it is that I’m not sure what to write about it. I always find it easier to write about something that is bad and I can’t think of one thing I didn’t like about this one. From the first few seconds until the very end I was glued to the screen. It was funny, creepy, shocking, surprising and full of twist after twist. Just when I think I had it all figured out it would take another direction and leave me wondering what would happen next. Before I get too much into the film I’ll let you check out the intro with Eli Roth, Ashley Bell and Patrick Fabian.

I’ve thought about this one a lot and I’ve decided that I don’t want to give anything away about the movie. The reason I enjoyed it so much is because right from the start of the film it went against everything I was expecting. This left me wondering what would happen next and it makes every second of the film that much more surprising. I did film the Q&A afterwards and I will be posting it here but I went to the trouble of taking out anything that was a big spoiler. They do still explore some of the bigger themes of the film and if you’re really into checking this out then I suggest skipping the Q&A altogether and just going to see the movie. After the film does come out I’ll probably repost this review with the full Q&A and all its spoiler goodness.

Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) begins the exorcism but it's unlike any I've ever seen before.

What I will talk about is the incredible job each actor does in their role. Patrick Fabian as the minister is the strongest character in the film. His ability to charm everyone is a key point to the film and I have to admit that I’d probably listen to anything this guy told me. He’s incredible in the movie. Ashley Bell does an equally good job as Nell Sweetzer, the young girl who is need of the exorcism. She can go from sweet to scary in a few seconds and her twisting and convulsing is all physical, no effects needed, which was hard to believe once I had seen it. Louis Herthum plays her father, Louis Sweetzer and Caleb Landry Jones plays her brother Caleb Sweetzer. They’re opposite ends of the spectrum with Herthum as the deeply religious dad and Jones as the faithless brother. Both actors bring the creep factor to their roles for different reasons and they play a huge part in the film. I just don’t want to say what part!

Caleb, helped by his father, is on the receiving end of some of Nell's violent outbursts.

I don’t think anyone will be disappointed with this one although I’m a little on the fence about the ending. It’s good but I’m not sure it was necessary. Through the entire film my thoughts on what was happening were turned on their head. As soon as I thought I had it figured out it would flip and go in a new direction and it flowed perfectly. Aside from the ending there isn’t a really shocking twist and all the ideas flowed together naturally. The performances are amazing, the creep factor is high and it had some impressive jump scares. My friend and his girlfriend joined us for the screening and I thought his girlfriend was going to pass out. I’ve never seen someone jump so high before! The movie was just a mind-blowing experience and I am dying to see it again. I loved every minute of it and will be going to the theater with my girlfriend to see this one again. Check out the spoiler free Q&A video below. I’m warning you that they do talk about some of the themes of the movie which I think are better left unknown until you’ve seen it. I really recommend seeing this one cold so every second can be fresh and new. You’ve been warned! HAHA!

I actually want to see this film now. Thanks for the non-spoilerific review.

I have a bit of fear talking about how good it was because if someone doesn't agree then I don't want to suffer the backlash but hot damn I thought the movie was just amazing. I'm used to mediocre horror and this isn't it. It delivers on so many levels. Comedy, intelligence, creepiness, beliefs, dedication, faith. I can't wait until it gets a full release on the 27th because I will be paying to see it with my girlfriend because I need to talk about it with someone. I think it'll be a movie that people start arguing over. Some will hate it, others will love it and I like to think I can be picky sometimes but I still give it a good recommendation.

Thank you very much for the review. I can't wait to watch it now, but unfortunately I'll have to wait until the 24th of September to see it here in Brasil, of course if I want to see it in the theatres, which I do.

I have to respectfully, and very strongly disagree. I can see where you are trying to take a high road here and explain what worked in the film, but I think you are being kinder than you ought to be. Bidites, at least those who enjoy scary horror films, listen up. The scariest thing about this film is what I consider to be one of the better one-sheet posters for any film in a long time. Unfortunately, it's yellow press all the way and leads you into a film that you will not see. The poster is the essence of the problem for me. The marketing for this film can only be described as criminally misleading. There is nothing else for it. Everyone involved with promoting this film should hang their heads in shame. In order for me to really explain what further irks me about how this film plays out, I really have to spoil and I won't go that far just yet, so forgive my intentional vagueness. The film starts out very promising. An excellent cast, a slightly protracted yet illuminating build that really, and in the end quite unnecessarily, allows the audience plenty of bonding time with the main characters, a setting that absolutely exudes creepiness from it's opening shot through the duration of the film. A lot of positives squandered on a terrible bait-and-switch Exorcist and Blair Witch rip off. The latter being so flagrant, I find it impossible that the reviewer overlooked this. It's bad, Bidites. I think it would have been effective had we not already seen it better done in BWP. The conclusion of this film is so rushed and the events of the ending so excruciatingly foreshadowed with Nell's hokey wall art that I couldn't help but wonder who Roth and Co. were pandering to with this film. If you like a film to end 180 degrees from where you expected and never watched the Blair Witch Project, you may leave the theater happy. If you are like myself, the friends who attended with me, or any one of the other fools who packed the theater last night and booed and demanded their money back as the credits began to roll, save your money. Don't get me wrong, I like an unconventional plot twist as much as anyone, but I don't like to be this misled and I would feel remiss in my duties not to inform all of you hardcore Bidites expecting a demon-filled creepfest that all is not as it seems with this film.

No one listen to Keith, this movie kicked ass! I don't understand what the heck he means by being misled? WTF would be the point in watching a damn movie if you have it all figured out? Jesus christ if you want to know whats going to happen in a movie get back to your re-runs fanboy.

This a fresh horror movie, gripping and very appealing to any horror fan. It pulls you in, makes you want more, and leaves you always asking... what could possibly happen next. Great film so worth watching!

How many more years will have to pass by before we stop calling every movie that is shot in the same way as Blair Witch a rip-off? Blair Witch wasn't the first film to be shot in that first person perspective type of way.

I actually loved the fact that the advertising had me thinking one way while the film goes in a totally different direction. I didn't want to see The Exorcist again and I thought that's what this movie was about but it wasn't. As I said in my review, I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending. It certainly wasn't as good as the rest of the movie but it didn't ruin anything at all. I can't see how it's an Exorcist rip-off at all. I can think of another movie that it takes more from but mentioning the name would only give away too much.

I also find it hard to believe that an entire theater full of people would boo this film. I'm sure there will be lots of people that don't like it but an entire theater full of haters. I'm not so sure about that.

I'll be making a trip to the drive-in next weekend to catch this and Piranha 3D, both for the second time and I'll probably end up going to see this one a third time with my girlfriend. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but they can have my money!

Rumor has it that his private home is the priciest in Melbourne. Usually, a contractor with a minimum of 5 years experience in the business indicates stability and reliability, which is a must in this kind of work.
