The Future of SCREAM and Writer Kevin Williamson

Oh Kevin Williamson, how you love to play with our emotions. First you get us hyped about an all new SCREAM trilogy (praying it's somehow better than the part 2 and 3) then we report back in July (CLICK HERE) that there is trouble in Woodsboro...

Follow up:

After much speculation it was widely reported that Williamson was taken off the SCREAM 4 project. What did that mean? Would he be back to finish the new trilogy? He had an option in his contract to pen installment number 5, that is of course if the 4th film in the series performs well at the box office.

Holdup says our friends at camp Deadline who reports that Kevin Williamson has signed a lucrative 3-year TV deal with Warner Bros TV to continue running his popular THE VAMPIRE DIARIES as well as develop other TV projects.

This has been Williamson's MO for years dating all the way back to the original SCREAM trilogy. SCREAM 2 was drafted under intense pressure from the studio because of Williamson's focus on his other hit TV show DAWSON'S CREEK. He then dropped out completely during production of SCREAM 3 to working on TV’s WASTELAND. Yes, there is a pattern here.

Many have speculated that the reason Williamson was dropped from the SCREAM 4 teams was due to his lack of concentration on the SCREAM 4 drafts. Missed deadlines was halting production all while Williamson was still working on VAMPIRE DIARIES.

It is no secret Williamson loves to be the center of attention and it is curious to see what will happen for his future. It would appear as if the next 3 years he will be wrapped up in TV shows. Does that mean he is out of SCREAM for good? Well it all depends on how well 4 performs at the box office. The Weinsteins parted company with the writer but no one is for sure on what terms. Stranger things have happened but at this hour a Kevin Williamson written SCREAM 5 and 6 seems highly unlikely. As always stay tuned as the saga continues much like the films themselves.

Happier times: Kevin Williamson and director Wes Craven announcing SCREAM 4.
