Is there any news on that? I heard they were remaking it into an R rated movie?
Who cares about this faux-Mortal Kombat crap. Obviously they don't have enough faith in it to get a deal with HBO (which did Spawn and is use to gritty stuff) or Showtime, Starz, and so on.
GIMME THE FILM! And have Trent Reznor and Marilyn Manson do the music for it.
Thanks for posting though HB.

I also didn't know they owned HBO. Learn something new everyday.
I wonder what they would do it under, like branch of the company, and if it would have it's own website. Probably.
The whole realistic MK thing from this short isn't that appealing to me. I mean, it looks cool, on its own, but I want to see the series based on the actual game. Does that make sense?
I know they tried to do it with the other movies, and when I was younger they were okay, but I'm older now and wanna see the bloody version, lol.
But, given all the gritty reboots, like Batman and so on, this may be the only path people are interested in taking, since it seems to be "in" at the moment.
No one said it'd be A PG rated thing haha. In an interview with the director of the Rebirth short, he said he wants to make it vicious and have the martial arts that made the series something spectacular. Now, I'm not saying I wouldn't rather see evil mystics from another realm but I'm glad that we got something. There won't be a new MK movie for a while since Threshold Entertainment is trying to screw WB over with rights issues.
It comes down to this. If there ever was going to be a sequel to that god awful Paul WS Anderson series it would've been a flop anyway. The only options were this or a reboot of the film and at the moment a film isn't quite feasible. Who knows though, this may inspire WB to take care of whatever bullshit is going on with Threshold and crank out a HARD R MK movie.
I guess from that stand point you make a great point though: this could open the franchise up to more theatrical possibilities, and if this is all I'm gonna get, then I'll accept it gladly, but I'll continue to hope for something else somewhere down the line.
If they really had faith in it, they'd just do it.
I mean, they obviously have the fanbase to do a show on HBO or something. And them owning HBO has nothing to do with them putting it out on there or not. To everyone else HBO is just a name, they don't know who owns what, and if they own it, it's not a big deal to put it out in television format, and it would sure as hell garner more viewers.
