Are You Ready for THE RITE Review? Does The Power of Christ Compel You?
Based on the book by Matt Baglio, The Rite is exactly what you would expect from another film about exorcism. The advantage of this film is that it is based on the factual tale of Rev. Gary Thomas, changed to Michael Kovak for the film. I'll use the term factual lightly as it really is up to the viewer to determine what their belief on the entire matter is....
Follow up:
Now, in any film dealing with exorcism we always seem to get the same story. Someone has no faith, witnesses an exorcism, now they have faith. It seems like pretty typical territory and there's no surprises here. Even knowing exactly where the story is going from the first moment didn't change how much I enjoyed the film. Hell, (no pun intended) even the obvious Hollywood ending didn't ruin the movie for me.
Colin O'Donoghue is Michael Kovak, a man running away from his families mortuary business by going to seminary school. (Pardon me if I get any terminology wrong here) He spends four years training to become a priest but decides that he doesn't have enough faith to follow through on it. Convinced that there's more for Michael to offer, Father Matthew (Toby Jones) sends Michael to Rome to attend a course that is training exorcists. Michael has little choice in the matter since his $100,000 education could be changed into a loan if he doesn't become a priest. Off he goes to Rome where he eventually meets up with Fr. Lucas Trevant (Anthony Hopkins). Michael begins training under Fr. Lucas, witnessing different exorcisms as his faith becomes stronger.

I don't think I'm revealing too much here and anyone can tell what's going to happen right from the set-up of the film. The real problem lies in how we finally reach our goal. Initially the film is very subtle. Michael follows Fr. Lucas as he performs an ongoing exorcism on a young pregnant girl, Rosaria (Marta Gastini). Anthony Hopkins as Fr. Lucas manages to add a little dose of humour here and there while Colin O'Donoghue as the priest-in-training Michael, gives us the perfect character who believes more in psychiatric help than exorcisms. Throughout the exorcisms on Rosaria, Fr. Lucas tries to show Michael that he has more faith than he imagines and that the Devil is real. Seems the Devil may have his own ideas on how to help as Rosaria knows things that she shouldn't causing Michael to question whether his lack of faith is right.
It's all very well done with great performances from everyone involved. Maybe they should have stopped there though. The Hollywood idea of what an exorcism movie should be starts to show up eventually and the real problem is when being subtle isn't enough anymore. The final half hour or so of the film I found to be way over the top in comparison to the rest of the film. It's this point where we're treated to the kind of visuals that are promised in the trailer and it's also when I started to shake my head. It's suddenly very corny, with Hopkins character eating up the script that was handed to him. Gone are the hints here and there that Michael is dealing with the Devil, replaced with a smack to the side of the head that would make anyone believe in the Devil.

The funny thing is I've heard people complain that the real exorcism doesn't get under way until this final part of the film. So they get what they want and still aren't happy! I still can't decide what kind of effect the final portion of the film has on the rest of it. I was drawn into the story of Michael as his ideas on faith are challenged and Hopkins does such a great job as Fr. Lucas, showing him as a priest who battles his own questions of faith while still managing to hold onto it. It seems less Hollywood at that point and reminded me a lot of The Last Exorcism. All of a sudden we're pushed back into Hollywood territory where the exorcism is all about spinning heads and pea soup. Show me the journey of a faith challenged priest, I'm all for that and it was done very well. There's no need to push things way over the top so we can have a final resolution on what Michael believes in.
With the ending, the public seems to get what it really wants and I can't see why anyone would dislike it. I would have preferred the more subtle approach that the rest of the film had but I still can't say it wasn't fun to watch Hopkins bounce around like a nut. There's some great effects work done in that final portion of the film even if the script had me rolling my eyes. There's a few jump scares that should have your girlfriend screeching in terror, great performances from the lead characters and some really beautiful shots in the film. Just be aware that you're getting exactly what you've gotten before and forget about trying to compare the movie to The Exorcist. Everyone will do it and it's just not fair. Can't we just enjoy one movie about exorcists without trying to compare to the best exorcism movie out there?

However, I have been looking forward to this movie since it was announced, so I could be in denial, and the movie could be horrible...however you're review proved me that it is indeed, as good as I think it is.
I did enjoy the movie and don't see anything really wrong with it. My girlfriend and I agreed that the ending seemed rushed and maybe if they had it play out a little longer it would have worked out better for me. Glad you enjoyed the movie even more than I did though! I was starting to wonder if I was insane for enjoying it as much as I did!
