Potential Cult Classic BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR Coming to DVD and Blu-ray
Odds are that more people reading this have seen the trailer than the actual film. It has yet to reach the viral status that something like THE ROOM has but it is standing strong on YouTube with about 300,000 views from a combined two trailers. It had a limited theatrical release in early 2010, with some event screenings prior to that, most notably its Los Angeles premier which was sponsored by our friends at camp Bloody Disgusting....
Follow up:
Before this initial theatrical release, and perhaps where it first started earning its reputation, there was a DVD released through Moviehead Pictures, which was manufactured on demand. Severin Films acquired the film for its theatrical run as well as to produce the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray releasing less than a month from now.
This is all fine, and perhaps good to know, but some of you are probably wondering what the big deal is at this point. Well, the best thing I can recommend you to do is to watch the trailer. If that does not sell you, than I'm certainly not going to either. Some things you should be aware of though: the film only cost a whopping total of $10,000 to produce and. James Nguyen (writer/director/producer/genius) took the film to Sundance - where his film was NOT in competition - to hand out stuffed birds and fliers prior to a screening in a theater near the festival that he rented out. Talk about commitment.
Unfortunately, the extras on the DVD/Blu-ray have not been announced yet, but Severin offer up this synopsis for the film on their website:
Plot Synopsis: "It is a tender love story. A graphic horror shocker. An urgent ecological warning. And around the world, it became the must-see ‘midnight movie’ sensation of the year: From writer/producer/director/visionary James Nguyen – The Master Of The Romantic Thriller – comes the story of a sexy lingerie model (Whitney Moore) and a successful software salesman (Alan Bagh) on a weekend getaway to a quaint Northern California town. But when the entire region is attacked by millions of homicidal birds, their picturesque paradise becomes a winged hell on earth. Can mankind now survive the avian onslaught of Birdemic? Hollywood legend Tippi Hendren of Hitchcock’s The Birds makes a Special Appearance in the global cult movie phenomenon that Videogum says “might end up being the greatest film of all time!"
Mark your calendars, Bidites. February 22nd, is the day this film officially makes history (term used extremely loosely). Oh, and one last thing, in case you need them the production company behind the film Severin, has taken it upon themselves to sell coat hangers with the film's title attached to them via paper. I'm being serious. The company that owns the rights to this film has put forth the effort to release COAT HANGERS. Are you sold yet? REALLY
