DRIVE ANGRY 3D Crashes Badly at the Box Office - Nic Cage's Hair to Blame?
Alright, so Cage's long flowing brunette locks are probably not the source of this disaster but damnit we need to pin this on someone and we certainly aren't blaming ourselves. This one hurts and hurts badly! We get the fact that not everyone is a Nic Cage fan, we get it, but to come in 9th place taking in only $5.1 million dollars?...
Follow up:
Where does the finger pointing begin? This film budget was $50 million dollars. That's a lot of claims Bidites. They took in $5.1 opening weekend and it doesn't take a mathematician (thank God) to know that this movie will not even come close to making its budget back. This is a true horror story. No pun intended.
So what went wrong with this mess? Is it a bad film? Was it marketed wrong? Did it have the wrong cast? The answer we feel came down to the marketing. This isn't a bad film by any means, and is actually one of those guilty pleasure films that will probably garner somewhat of a cult following.
The problem seems to be the lack of a real solid foundation to classify the film under. From the trailer and the mountains of clips we were shown of the film, nothing told us really what to expect. Was it going to be a vintage 70's throwback road movie? Was it straight action? Is Nicolas Cage the devil? Is the car the devil? It tried to be too many things and at the end of the day the audience didn't know what to make of it. They obviously proved that by not buying a ticket.
It's a shame too because anytime you have a film with Nic Cage riddling off this many great one liners it needs to be seen and enjoyed (sarcastic?). We pray for a good DVD/Blu-ray release but regardless this is one of the worst box office blunders in recent memory. Someone at Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the film, is literally DRIVING ANGRY today, and we have a feeling a box full of their office supplies and a pink slip is sitting in their passenger seat. Not a good way to start off the week, we know that much.
